RAT CONTROL & RODENT EXCLUSION

Rat Control, Rodent Proofing & Attic Cleanup in Southern California

Hearing scratching in the attic at night, seeing droppings in the garage, or finding chewed wiring in the crawlspace? That’s not “just part of living in SoCal” – that’s a rodent problem that can damage your home and affect your family’s health if it’s not handled the right way.

Urban Wildlife Trapping Experts provides professional rat control and rodent exclusion across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. We find exactly how rats are getting in, trap and remove them without attic poison dumps, and then seal the structure and clean up what they left behind.

Licensed & insured • No attic poison dumps • Attic & crawlspace cleanup available

Where We Most Often Find Rats

  • Attics with chewed wires, tunnels in insulation and urine odor
  • Crawlspaces with droppings, burrows and contaminated vapor barriers
  • Garage storage, water heater closets and laundry rooms
  • “Carpenter gaps” in roof eaves and open chaseways inside walls
  • Yards, sheds and ivy-covered fences leading right up to the house

Real Rat Work, Not Just “Spray & Pray” Pest Control

We’re not a quick-spray bug company tossing poison bait blocks into your attic and hoping for the best. We are structure-focused trappers who actually get dirty in attics, crawlspaces and roof lines to find where rats are living and how they’re getting in.

We are not just “pump, pray and spray.” Real trappers get dirty in the attic and crawlspace so the rats are gone and the structure is actually tightened up.

Common Signs of a Rat Infestation

Rats almost never announce themselves in the middle of the living room. Instead, they work the edges of the structure – attics, crawlspaces, wall voids and garages – until the damage and contamination get bad enough that you finally notice.

Noises & Activity Patterns

  • Scratching, scurrying or thumping in the attic mostly at night
  • Noises in walls, especially near plumbing or chases
  • Activity in the crawlspace, often heard under bedrooms or hallways
  • Rats running along fence tops, power lines or roof edges at dusk

Droppings, Smell & Damage

  • Small dark droppings on insulation, ductwork and beams
  • Urine odor, especially on hot days when the attic heats up
  • Chewed wires, gnawed plastic lines and damaged HVAC flex duct
  • Grease rub marks along entry points and travel routes

Entry Points Rats Love

  • Open carpenter gaps in roof eaves where framing was never fully closed
  • Gaps around plumbing penetrations and electrical conduits entering walls
  • Loose or missing vent screens and torn gable vents
  • Unsealed crawlspace doors and soil-to-wood contact areas

If any of this sounds familiar, you don’t just need bait tossed in the attic – you need real rat control and exclusion work so the problem is solved at the source.

Rat Inspection: We Find Exactly How They’re Getting In

Every job starts with a full inspection. Our goal is simple: map the rats’ entire route – from the outside of the property, to the entry points, to nesting and feeding areas inside the structure.

What We Check Outside

  • Rooflines, eaves and “carpenter gaps” where framing is open
  • Vines, trees and utility lines that create rat highways to the roof
  • Gaps around garage doors, siding transitions and pipe penetrations
  • Burrows, rat runs and droppings around the foundation and yard

What We Check Inside

  • Attic insulation for tunnels, nests and heavy droppings
  • Chewed wiring, damaged HVAC lines and soiled ductwork
  • Crawlspace joists, beams and vapor barriers for droppings and urine
  • Wall voids, chaseways and open voids behind tubs, sinks and cabinets

After the inspection, you get a clear explanation of what’s going on and what it will take to fix it – from trapping and sealing to attic cleaning and crawlspace decontamination if needed.

Rat Control: Why We Don’t Dump Poison in Your Attic

Poison in the attic sounds fast and easy – until rats die in the walls, crawlspace or duct chases and your house smells like a dead animal for weeks. That’s why our focus is targeted trapping and real exclusion, not just tossing bait around.

How Our Rat Control Program Works

  • Place professionally set traps in strategic locations, not random snap traps thrown around
  • Use building knowledge to work their travel routes, not just food stations
  • Remove captured rats and reset traps until activity actually stops

Exclusion & Damage Repair

Trapping alone is a temporary fix. We pair it with exclusion and damage repair to close the structure up:

  • Seal carpenter gaps with proper flashing and rodent-proof materials
  • Screen and secure attic, roof and crawlspace vents
  • Foam and hardware-cloth around plumbing, conduit and line penetrations
  • Rebuild or tighten crawlspace doors and access hatches

Most customers go with a full program: inspection, trapping, exclusion and cleanup. That’s how you get long-term results instead of an endless cycle of “We tossed more bait, see you in 30 days.”

What Rats Do to Attics, Crawlspaces & Walls

Rats aren’t just “gross.” They physically change the inside of your home. The longer they’re there, the more damage and contamination you’re dealing with.

In the Attic

  • Chewed electrical wiring – potential fire hazard
  • Tunnels and nests buried in insulation, soaked with urine
  • Droppings scattered across joists, beams and HVAC lines
  • Stains on drywall from long-term urine saturation

In the Crawlspace

  • Droppings and urine on soil, piers and plumbing
  • Chewed plastic lines, drain lines and condensation lines
  • Contaminated vapor barrier and insulation
  • Burrows at the foundation and under concrete slabs

Health & Air Quality

Attics and crawlspaces are part of your home’s air system. When rats have been in those areas for months or years, you’re dealing with:

  • Odors drifting into living spaces, especially in warm weather
  • Potential exposure to rodent-borne bacteria and allergens
  • Contamination of access points used by HVAC or service technicians

That’s why so many of our rat control jobs turn into full attic restoration or crawlspace cleanup projects. Getting the rats out is step one. Cleaning up after them is step two.

Rat Cleanup, Decontamination & Insulation Replacement

Once the structure is sealed and trapping has quieted down, we can safely move into cleanup and restoration. This is where we undo years of rat damage and reset the attic or crawlspace back to a healthier baseline.

Attic Cleaning & Restoration

  • Remove heavily contaminated insulation and bulk droppings
  • HEPA-vacuum accessible surfaces to capture fine debris
  • Apply disinfectant / deodorizer to correct odor issues
  • Install fresh insulation to help restore energy efficiency

Crawlspace Cleaning

  • Remove droppings, nesting material and soiled debris
  • Pull and replace contaminated vapor barrier where needed
  • Address access doors and open gaps that allowed rodents in
  • Coordinate with any plumbing or structural repairs if required

When it makes sense, we’ll document everything with photos – before, during and after – so you can see exactly what you paid for and have something to show future buyers, insurance or property managers.

Long term, we plan to publish a rat behavior guide at /wildlife-encyclopedia/rats/ so homeowners can understand how rats move through urban neighborhoods and what actually works to keep them out.

Rat Control & Rodent Exclusion FAQs

Do you use poison to get rid of rats?

Not in your attic or inside the structure. Our focus is trapping and sealing entry points so rats are actually removed and can’t come back through the same routes. In some exterior situations, baiting may be part of a larger plan, but we don’t just dump poison in attic spaces and walk away.

How long does a typical rat control job take?

Most rat jobs run in phases. The initial inspection and setup happen on the first visit. Trapping usually runs for 1–3 weeks depending on how heavy the activity is. Exclusion and repairs are scheduled as soon as we have a solid handle on the routes. Cleanup and restoration come after things have been quiet for a bit.

Can’t I just put out my own traps?

You can, and some people get a couple of rats that way. The problem is what you don’t see – hidden entry points in the roofline, crawlspace openings, and long-established routes inside the structure. DIY trapping rarely fixes the source of the problem, so new rats move right in behind the ones you caught.

Do I really need attic or crawlspace cleaning?

Not every job needs full restoration, but if rats have been up there for a while, the contamination is usually worse than it looks from the hatch. We’ll give you an honest assessment and show you photos so you can decide. When the contamination is heavy, attic cleaning and crawlspace cleanup are what reset the health and odor situation.

Will rats come back after you’re done?

Rats live all around us in Southern California. No company can promise that one will never walk across your roof again. What we can promise is to find and close the real entry points and trap out the active population using the structure, so your home isn’t an easy target anymore.
