NON-VENOMOUS SNAKE REMOVAL

Non-Venomous Snake Removal & Yard Inspections in Southern California

Found a snake in your yard, garage, or crawlspace and not sure what you’re looking at? In Southern California we see a lot of completely harmless snakes – but that doesn’t mean you want them living under your house, under kids’ play equipment, or inside a garage where you walk barefoot.

Urban Wildlife Trapping Experts provides professional non-venomous snake removal across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. We safely remove common backyard species like Pacific gopher snakes, striped racers, California kingsnakes, garter snakes, coachwhips, ring-necked and sharp-tailed snakes – and then show you why they were there and how to reduce future visits.

Real Field Experience with SoCal Snakes

Our work isn’t from a textbook. We spend real time in Southern California yards, hillsides and crawlspaces dealing with snakes where people actually live and walk their dogs.

We are not just “pump, pray and spray.” Real trappers get dirty under decks, in crawlspaces and along fence lines to actually find where snakes are moving and why.

Important Safety Warning: Not Sure If It’s a Rattlesnake?

Some non-venomous snakes in Southern California flatten their heads, hiss and shake their tails in dry leaves to mimic rattlesnakes – especially Pacific gopher snakes. That can make ID tricky when you’re looking from a safe distance or through a sliding glass door.

When in Doubt, Treat It as a Rattlesnake

  • Do not try to pick up, pin, or “relocate” the snake yourself.
  • Keep children and pets away and watch from a safe distance.
  • If you are not 100% sure it’s harmless, act like it is a rattlesnake.

If there’s any doubt, it’s safer to call our rattlesnake removal line and let a licensed professional make the call on site.

Whether it turns out to be non-venomous or venomous, the priority is the same: keep people and pets safe, then deal with the animal the right way.

Common Non-Venomous Snakes We Remove in Southern California

Non-venomous snakes are a normal part of the ecosystem. Most of them help by eating rodents, slugs and insects. The problem is when they choose your patio, dog run, or crawlspace as a hangout.

Pacific Gopher Snakes

Thick-bodied snakes that can look very similar to rattlesnakes at a glance. They flatten their heads, hiss loudly and may shake their tails in dry leaves. They’re usually hunting rodents in:

  • Backyards with gopher and ground squirrel activity
  • Along fences, sheds, and retaining walls
  • Near crawlspace vents and under concrete slabs

Striped Racers & Coachwhips

Fast, alert snakes that move through open ground and brush. We often see them:

  • Along hillsides, canyon edges and block walls
  • In sunny side yards and around storage piles
  • Moving quickly across patios, then disappearing into vegetation

California Kingsnakes

Handsome banded snakes that sometimes move into yards with good hiding spots and food. They’re known to eat other snakes, plus small rodents and lizards. Clients usually see them:

  • Near woodpiles, old landscaping timbers and stacked materials
  • At the base of sheds, under steps and along foundations
  • Occasionally in garages or storage rooms

Garter Snakes

Slim snakes that often stay near lawns, water features and moist areas. They may show up:

  • Near ponds, drip lines, and dense ground covers
  • In shaded side yards with consistent moisture
  • Under garden edging and landscape stone

Ring-Necked & Sharp-Tailed Snakes

Secretive, small snakes that spend a lot of time underground or under cover. Most people meet them by accident when moving boards, tarps or rock:

  • Under old plywood, tarps and stored materials
  • In moist soil under logs, stones and landscape borders
  • Occasionally in garages and under sheds where moisture stays high

Whether it’s a bold gopher snake or a tiny sharp-tailed snake, our job is the same: identify it correctly, remove it safely, and help you understand why it picked your property.

Snake Inspection & Identification: We Don’t Guess from the Driveway

Every snake call starts with a simple question: “Where did you see it and what was it doing?” From there, we walk the property to find both the animal and the conditions that brought it in.

What We Look At During a Snake Inspection

  • Rodent sign (burrows, droppings, gnaw marks) that may be attracting snakes
  • Ground cover, brush, stacked lumber and debris piles
  • Gaps under sheds, steps, decks and concrete slabs
  • Openings into crawlspaces and wall voids where snakes may be moving through the structure
  • Areas where children and pets play, walk or lay down

If we find signs that snakes are also moving through rodent tunnels or under the structure, we may recommend a deeper crawlspace inspection and clean-out and, if needed, targeted exclusion and repair work.

Our Non-Venomous Snake Removal Process

Once we’ve confirmed the snake is non-venomous and located, we handle the removal and any follow-up steps needed to keep your family comfortable.

1. Safe Capture

  • Use professional snake handling tools – no DIY pinning or grabbing.
  • Contain the snake safely to prevent escape inside the structure.
  • Keep people and pets back while we work.

2. Legal, Humane Handling

We follow California guidelines and local rules on how snakes can be handled and relocated. The goal is always safe for you, safe for the snake, and legal for everyone.

3. Check for Additional Activity

  • Look for other likely hide spots on the property.
  • Identify rodent activity that may be drawing snakes in.
  • Flag any structural gaps or crawlspace issues that should be sealed.

If rodents are part of the problem, we can coordinate with rodent control services or integrate that into a larger plan, especially where you also need crawlspace cleaning or attic decontamination after a long-term infestation.

Snake Prevention, Exclusion & Clean-Up

You can’t snake-proof raw nature, but you can make a single yard a lot less attractive. We focus on the three things snakes like most: food, cover, and travel routes.

Exclusion & Structural Work

  • Screen and secure crawlspace vents and access doors.
  • Close gaps under steps, sheds and low decks where snakes can hide.
  • Recommend or perform exclusion and damage repair where rodents and snakes are using the same paths.

Yard & Habitat Recommendations

  • Reduce dense ground covers and long, unmowed patches right against the house.
  • Move firewood, lumber and stored items off the ground where possible.
  • Address heavy rodent and gopher activity that is feeding snakes.

Long term, we plan to publish a behavior guide at /wildlife-encyclopedia/snakes/ so homeowners can understand how snakes move through urban neighborhoods and what actually works to reduce encounters.

Non-Venomous Snake Removal FAQs

How do I know if the snake is venomous or not?

From across the yard, it’s easy to get it wrong. Some Pacific gopher snakes flatten their heads and hiss, looking very similar to rattlesnakes. The safest move is simple: if you’re not 100% sure it’s harmless, treat it like it could be venomous and call for help. We can route the call through our rattlesnake removal process if needed.

Are non-venomous snakes dangerous?

Non-venomous snakes can still bite if cornered or grabbed, and a bite can require medical attention. The bigger concern is where they are: in kids’ play areas, near pets, or in spaces where people can step on them by accident. That’s why many homeowners still choose professional removal.

Will you kill every snake you find?

No. Our goal is safe, legal and humane handling. We capture and manage non-venomous snakes according to California guidelines. We’re not in the business of randomly destroying wildlife – we’re here to protect people and property and fix the conditions that caused the issue.

Can you “snake-proof” my whole yard?

Nobody can honestly promise a completely snake-free property, especially near open space or canyons. What we can do is tighten up your structure, reduce heavy hiding spots, and address rodent problems so your yard is a lot less attractive to snakes.

Do I still need you if the snake left on its own?

Maybe. Snakes move through patterns and routes – if one used your yard and crawlspace as a path, others may do the same. A quick inspection can tell you whether you have a one-time visitor or an ongoing setup snakes will keep using.
