Whether squirrels are running the roofline, chewing fascia boards, or nesting in insulation, we’ll show you exactly what’s going on and how to stop it.
Signs You Have Squirrels in the Attic, Walls or Roof
Squirrels are daylight demolition crews. They run, jump, stash food, chew everything and treat insulation like a hotel. The earlier you catch them, the less damage they do.
Common Clues We See on Squirrel Jobs
- Scratching, running or rolling sounds in the ceiling early in the morning and before dark – especially along the edges of rooms.
- Chewed fascia boards, roof edges and vents, including gnawed corners where a squirrel has enlarged a small gap into a main doorway.
- Nut shells, acorns and seed piles in the attic, garage rafters or around access hatches.
- Droppings on top of insulation or on stored items in the attic.
- Squirrels running power lines and then disappearing at the same spot on your roof.
- Scratching in walls near chimneys, soffits or upstairs eaves.
If you’re not sure whether it’s rats, squirrels, or something bigger, that’s our job. We specialize in animal identification so you’re not wasting money on the wrong treatment.
What Squirrels Destroy Inside Your Home
Squirrels look cute on a tree; they are not cute in an attic. Constant chewing and digging can turn a minor entry hole into a serious fire, odor, and contamination problem.
Damage We Commonly Find on Squirrel Jobs
- Chewed electrical wires in attics, junction boxes and along roof trusses – a legitimate fire hazard.
- Insulation shredded and tunneled, lowering energy efficiency and spreading droppings and urine.
- Gnawed wood, fascia and roof decking where squirrels have opened up carpenter gaps and soft spots.
- Contaminated insulation and debris in crawlspaces and under floors when squirrels use under-structure voids.
- Entry and exit holes that also invite rats, mice and other wildlife.
Left alone, squirrels will keep using the same high-traffic routes year after year. Our job is to break that pattern, repair the structure, and clean up the mess so you’re not stuck in a repeat cycle.
Our Squirrel Removal & Control Process
We don’t guess from the driveway. We inspect, identify, and build a plan based on how squirrels are actually using your house.
1. Full Exterior & Roofline Inspection
- Walk the perimeter and roof edge looking for chew marks, rub marks, and entry gaps in fascia, eaves and vents.
- Check roof returns, chimneys, roof-to-wall transitions and carpenter gaps where construction left small voids.
- Identify all potential animal doorways – not just the obvious one – so we can seal everything properly later.
2. Attic & Crawlspace Inspection
- Inspect insulation, wires, ducting and plumbing penetrations for chew damage.
- Look for squirrel runways, droppings and stash piles in attics and crawlspaces.
- Document damage with photos so you can see exactly what we’re talking about.
If there is heavy contamination, we may recommend attic cleaning and decontamination or crawlspace clean-out as part of the full fix.
3. Humane Squirrel Removal – Traps & One-Way Doors
- Use species-appropriate traps and one-way doors depending on structure layout and local regulations.
- Place equipment at the right locations so we catch the squirrels using their natural travel routes.
- Monitor activity, remove captures promptly, and adjust as needed.
No attic poison dumps, no guesswork. We’re licensed trappers, not generic spray techs.
4. Exclusion, Repairs & Follow-Up
- Seal squirrel entry points with chew-resistant materials – metal, hardware cloth, and proper construction – not just foam.
- Recommend or perform exclusion and damage repair so the structure is tighter than before the squirrels showed up.
- Provide follow-up guidance on trimming trees, securing food sources and preventing future issues.
Our goal is simple: get the squirrels out, keep them out, and restore the space so you don’t have to think about it again.
Attic & Crawlspace Cleaning After Squirrel Infestations
Squirrels don’t just visit – they nest, stash and contaminate. When they’ve been in your attic or crawlspace for a while, cleanup becomes just as important as removal.
Attic Clean-Up & Restoration
- Remove heavily contaminated insulation and squirrel nesting materials.
- Vacuum droppings and debris from accessible areas.
- Apply deodorization and disinfectant products to help reduce odor and bacterial load.
- Coordinate with insulation contractors if a full re-blow is needed.
For more severe attic cases, we may recommend a dedicated attic cleaning and decontamination service to bring the space back to a healthy condition.
Crawlspace Squirrel Damage
- Inspect vapor barrier, insulation and plumbing lines for chew damage.
- Remove droppings, debris and nesting where squirrels have traveled or stayed.
- Seal off low access points and carpenter gaps where animals are moving up into walls and attic voids.
Crawlspaces are out of sight and usually last on everyone’s list. We put eyes under the house so you know exactly what’s going on down there.
Squirrel Prevention & Chew-Proof Exclusion
Trapping alone won’t fix a house that’s full of open gaps and chewable edges. Prevention is where you get the long-term win.
Common Upgrades We Recommend
- Repair and cover roof vents, gable vents and attic fans with chew-resistant screening.
- Close off roof-to-wall gaps and soffit openings with proper metal and trim work.
- Reinforce corners and soft wood edges that squirrels are targeting or testing.
- Trim tree limbs and vegetation that give squirrels a direct runway onto the roof.
- Tighten up garages, sheds and storage areas where squirrels are nesting in boxes and stored items.
For clients who want a deeper dive, we plan to add a wildlife behavior guide at /wildlife-encyclopedia/squirrels/ that explains why squirrels pick certain homes and how to stay off their list.

Squirrel Removal FAQs
How do I know if it’s squirrels or rats in my attic?
Squirrels are louder, heavier, and usually active in the early morning and before dark. Rats are lighter and more active late at night. Squirrels also leave shells, acorns and chewed wood near entry points. During your inspection we’ll confirm exactly what you have before we build a plan.
Can squirrels cause a fire by chewing wires?
Yes. Squirrels are notorious for chewing electrical lines and low-voltage wiring in attics and crawlspaces. Any time we find chew damage, we recommend having wiring checked by a qualified electrician after the animals are removed.
Will repellents or noise machines get rid of squirrels?
Repellents, sound devices and flashing lights may push squirrels around for a short time, but they rarely solve an attic that has open gaps and easy access. Physical exclusion and structural repair are what actually stop squirrels from using your home long-term.
Do you seal my home after trapping the squirrels?
Yes. Exclusion is a standard part of our squirrel work. Once we are confident animals are out or moving through a one-way system, we seal entry points with chew-resistant materials and recommend any additional exclusion and damage repair you may need.
Can I just wait for squirrels to leave on their own?
They might leave for a season, but they usually come back – or another squirrel takes the same route. Meanwhile, they keep chewing, contaminating insulation and expanding entry holes. The sooner you deal with it, the cheaper and cleaner the fix usually is.
Are your squirrel removal methods humane?
Yes. We use humane trapping, one-way doors where appropriate, and legal, California-compliant methods. No attic poison dumps, no shortcuts that leave dead animals rotting in walls or crawlspaces.
